Geoff Parker, 2015 Teacher Merit Award Winner
Nominated by Vic Mensch:
Geoff provides great informal leadership, and builds others' skills through exceptional teamwork. He is a consummate professional, a terrifically fun, creative guy who lives servant leadership without ever having read the book.
(Calmest conference co-director I have ever seen!) Has 20+ years of admiration from his colleagues, like me! :)
Geoff is active in seeking out PD opportunities, and his interests are wide-ranging. He is highly interested in education regarding methodology, ELA, the brain and learning. He has sought out conferences such as Understanding by Design, that have had a significant influence on not only his practice, but also the practices of our department members. Geoff has done item development for ELA 30-2 diplomas, and has been a long-time marker and group leader. Additionally, he has worked as a Standards Confirmer for several years.
By nature, Geoff is a natural leader. His enthusiasm and passion for teaching are contagious, and his constant desire to improve is inspiring. Geoff served as department head at Lindsay Thurber for 5 years, during which time he was also on the school's AISI committee. Geoff demonstrates commitment to the profession by regularly presenting at ELAC conferences, and the Beginning Teachers conference. He has presented at the Central Alberta Teachers' Convention, and is also a regular speaker in Red Deer College classrooms.
Geoff has been a dedicated volunteer at our school since he started teaching at LTCHS. He has coached the track and field team as well as the cross-country running team. For several years, he served as Grad Coordinator. He is part of the Music Parents' Association. This volunteer spirit runs in his family...they are all amazing people. :)
